The Spanish Grand Prix 1996 was the 7th round of the 1996 F1 season, and took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, Spain, on June 2nd.
Michael Schumacher won the race after starting in the 3rd position, followed by Jean Alesi, and Jacques Villeneuve completing the podium.
Damon Hill started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he lost control and spun off the track, and had to retire on lap 10th.

The reace did not end without incidents... 16 drivers out of the original 22 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.
These included, Jos Verstappen, Gerhard Berger, Johnny Herbert, Damon Hill, and Eddie Irvine, all of whom lost control and spun off the track, Rubens Barrichello, and Martin Brundle, both had a problem with the differential, Ukyo Katayama, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 8, Olivier Panis, Giancarlo Fisichella, David Coulthard, Ricardo Rosset, and Pedro Lamy, all of whom retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, and Luca Badoer, and Andrea Montermini, both did not qualify due to the 107% rule.

Qualifying
From 1996 to 2002 the grid order was decided in a single qualifying session which would last 1 hour. During this time each driver had a maximun of 12 laps to set their best time.
This time around, Damon Hill managed to secure the pole position with a time of 1:20.650 seconds, with his teammate Jacques Villeneuve rigth behind him at 0.434 seconds, helping Williams score a one-two and monopolize the first line of the grid.
