The San Marino Grand Prix 1996 was the 5th round of the 1996 F1 season, and took place at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy, on May 5th.

Damon Hill won the race after starting in the 2nd position, followed by Michael Schumacher, who originally had the pole position, and Gerhard Berger completing the podium.

Incidents

The reace did not end without incidents... 14 drivers out of the original 22 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Mika Häkkinen, Olivier Panis, Ricardo Rosset, Giancarlo Fisichella, and Mika Salo, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Jacques Villeneuve, who suffered a suspension problem on lap 57, Ukyo Katayama, and Martin Brundle, both lost control and spun off the track, David Coulthard, and Jos Verstappen, both experienced an hydraulic malfunction, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 32, Johnny Herbert, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 25, and Andrea Montermini, who did not qualify due to the 107% rule on lap 0.
