1989 Portuguese Grand Prix

The Portuguese Grand Prix 1989 was the 13th round of the 1989 F1 season, and took place at the Autódromo do Estoril in Estoril, Portugal, on September 24th.

Gerhard Berger won the race after starting in the 2nd position, followed by Alain Prost, and Stefan Johansson completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 12th position of the grid.

Ayrton Senna started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, and had to retire on lap 48th.

The reace did not end without incidents... 21 drivers out of the original 39 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Riccardo Patrese, and Thierry Boutsen, both suffered from an overall car overhating, Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, and Alex Caffi, all of whom retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, Derek Warwick, who had to retire due to an accident on lap 37, Emanuele Pirro, who suffered a suspension problem on lap 29, Ivan Capelli, who suffered an engine malfunction on lap 25, Eddie Cheever, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 24, Andrea de Cesaris, and Roberto Moreno, both suffered from electrical problems, and Yannick Dalmas, Jyrki Järvilehto, Piercarlo Ghinzani, Oscar Larrauri, Gabriele Tarquini, Nicola Larini, Aguri Suzuki, Bernd Schneider, and Enrico Bertaggia, all of whom did not prequalify.

There was also action outise of the track itself, and the stwearts decided to disqualify Nigel Mansell.
