These included, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, and Marc Gené, all of whom lost control and spun off the track, Jean Alesi, Pedro Diniz, and Johnny Herbert, all of whom suffered a suspension problem, Olivier Panis, and Toranosuke Takagi, both suffered an engine malfunction, David Coulthard, Pedro de la Rosa, and Luca Badoer, all of whom experienced issues with the gearbox, Mika Salo, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 36, Jacques Villeneuve, who had an oil leak on lap 32, and Damon Hill, who retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars on lap 3.
