1997 Japanese Grand Prix

The Japanese Grand Prix 1997 was the 16th round of the 1997 F1 season, and took place at the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka, Japan, on October 12th.

Michael Schumacher won the race after starting in the 2nd position, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and Eddie Irvine completing the podium.

Jacques Villeneuve started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he , and had to retire on lap 53rd.

Incidents

The reace did not end without incidents... 10 drivers out of the original 22 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, David Coulthard, Mika Salo, Olivier Panis, and Ukyo Katayama, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Tarso Marques, who experienced issues with the gearbox on lap 46, Shinji Nakano, who had a problem witht he wheel bearing on lap 22, Rubens Barrichello, and Jan Magnussen, both lost control and spun off the track, and Gianni Morbidelli, who was injured on lap 0.

There was also action outise of the track itself, and the stwearts decided to disqualify Jacques Villeneuve at the end of the race.
