1989 Japanese Grand Prix

The Japanese Grand Prix 1989 was the 15th round of the 1989 F1 season, and took place at the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka, Japan, on October 22nd.

Alessandro Nannini won the race after starting in the 6th position, followed by Riccardo Patrese, and Thierry Boutsen completing the podium.

Ayrton Senna started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he , and had to retire on lap 53rd.

The reace did not end without incidents... 25 drivers out of the original 39 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Alain Prost, Emanuele Pirro, and Luis Pérez-Sala, all of whom retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, Stefano Modena, Nigel Mansell, Satoru Nakajima, Philippe Alliot, and Olivier Grouillard, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger, and Bernd Schneider, all of whom experienced issues with the gearbox, Ivan Capelli, who suffered a suspension problem on lap 27, Nicola Larini, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 21, Jonathan Palmer, who had a fuel leak on lap 20, Paolo Barilla, who had a problem with the clutch on lap 0, and Piercarlo Ghinzani, Roberto Moreno, Stefan Johansson, Aguri Suzuki, Oscar Larrauri, Jyrki Järvilehto, Gabriele Tarquini, Yannick Dalmas, and Enrico Bertaggia, all of whom did not prequalify.

There was also action outise of the track itself, and the stwearts decided to disqualify Ayrton Senna.
