The reace did not end without incidents... 12 drivers out of the original 22 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.
These included, Rubens Barrichello, and Jan Magnussen, both suffered an engine malfunction, Mika Salo, who had a problem with the clutch on lap 33, Jacques Villeneuve, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 33, Ukyo Katayama, who run out of fuel on lap 23, Johnny Herbert, and Pedro Diniz, both had to retire due to an accident, David Coulthard, who had a transmission problem on lap 1, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and Eddie Irvine, both retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, and Tarso Marques, who experienced issues with the gearbox on lap 0.

From 1996 to 2002 the grid order was decided in a single qualifying session which would last 1 hour. During this time each driver had a maximun of 12 laps to set their best time.
