These included, David Coulthard, who retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars on lap 71, Mika Salo, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 61, Alexander Wurz, Pedro Diniz, Norberto Fontana, Jos Verstappen, and Shinji Nakano, all of whom lost control and spun off the track, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Häkkinen, and Tarso Marques, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, and Jan Magnussen, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 33.
