These included, Bruno Giacomelli, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 60, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Nelson Piquet, and Derek Daly, all of whom had a transmission problem, René Arnoux, who experienced problems with the chassis of the car on lap 40, Arturo Merzario, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Brett Lunger, and Patrick Depailler, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Keke Rosberg, Riccardo Patrese, and Didier Pironi, all of whom had to retire due to an accident, Alan Jones, who had a throttle issue on lap 17, Rupert Keegan, who withdrew on lap 0, and Harald Ertl, Danny Ongais, and Rolf Stommelen, all of whom did not prequalify.
