The Detroit Grand Prix 1987 was the 5th round of the 1987 F1 season, and took place at the Detroit Street Circuit in Detroit, USA, on June 21st.

Ayrton Senna won the race after starting in the 2nd position, followed by Nelson Piquet, and Alain Prost completing the podium.

Nigel Mansell started from the pole position, but only managed to finish 5th.

These included, Thierry Boutsen, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 52, Piercarlo Ghinzani, who had a problem with the clutch on lap 51, Philippe Streiff, who had a wheel problem on lap 44, Philippe Alliot, Derek Warwick, Teo Fabi, Adrián Campos, and Satoru Nakajima, all of whom had to retire due to an accident, Michele Alboreto, Alessandro Nannini, and Andrea de Cesaris, all of whom experienced issues with the gearbox, Martin Brundle, who had a turbo failure on lap 16, Ivan Capelli, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 9, and Alex Caffi, who had a transmission problem on lap 3.
