1984 Detroit Grand Prix

The Detroit Grand Prix 1984 was the 8th round of the 1984 F1 season, and took place at the Detroit Street Circuit in Detroit, USA, on June 24th.

Nelson Piquet won the race from the pole, followed by Elio de Angelis, and Teo Fabi completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 23rd position of the grid.

The reace did not end without incidents... 21 drivers out of the original 27 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Michele Alboreto, Thierry Boutsen, Eddie Cheever, and Manfred Winkelhock, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Keke Rosberg, who had a turbo failure on lap 47, Derek Warwick, and Nigel Mansell, both experienced issues with the gearbox, Stefan Bellof, Ayrton Senna, François Hesnault, Piercarlo Ghinzani, René Arnoux, and Marc Surer, all of whom had to retire due to an accident, Patrick Tambay, who had a transmission problem on lap 33, Philippe Alliot, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 33, Niki Lauda, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 33, Andrea de Cesaris, who suffered from an overall car overhating on lap 24, Johnny Cecotto, who had a problem with the clutch on lap 23, Riccardo Patrese, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 20, and Jonathan Palmer, who experienced issues with a tyre on lap 2.

There was also action outise of the track itself, and the stwearts decided to disqualify Martin Brundle.
