These included, Jos Verstappen, Jarno Trulli, and Olivier Panis, all of whom saw the breaks of the car give up, David Coulthard, and Enrique Bernoldi, both suffered an engine malfunction, Jacques Villeneuve, who had problems with the halfshaft on lap 34, Juan Pablo Montoya, who had to retire due to an accident on lap 19, Rubens Barrichello, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 19, Jenson Button, who had an oil leak on lap 17, Fernando Alonso, who had a transmission problem on lap 7, and Nick Heidfeld, Eddie Irvine, and Giancarlo Fisichella, all of whom retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars.
