Mika Häkkinen won the race after starting in the 2nd position, followed by Giancarlo Fisichella, and Eddie Irvine completing the podium.
Michael Schumacher started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he lost control and spun off the track, and had to retire on lap 29th.

These included, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and Alessandro Zanardi, both saw the breaks of the car give up, Toranosuke Takagi, Pedro de la Rosa, and Alexander Wurz, all of whom had a transmission problem, Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Ricardo Zonta, all of whom lost control and spun off the track, Rubens Barrichello, who had issues with the steering of the car on lap 14, and Jean Alesi, and Jarno Trulli, both retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars.
