Gilles Villeneuve won the race after starting in the 3rd position, followed by Jody Scheckter, and Carlos Reutemann completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 11th position of the grid.
Jean-Pierre Jarier started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he had an oil leak, and had to retire on lap 49th.
