Juan Pablo Montoya won the race after starting in the 3rd position, followed by Fernando Alonso, who originally had the pole position, and Kimi Räikkönen completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 12th position of the grid.

After the fiasco of the two one-lap sessions that the F1 had envisioned for the 2005 seasosn, and that they decided to drop after just 6 races, the rest of the season's qualifyings were disputed on a single on-lap format, as it happened in this race.
