John Watson won the race after starting in the 5th position, followed by Carlos Reutemann, and Jacques Laffite completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 14th position of the grid.

René Arnoux started from the pole position, but only managed to finish 9th.

These included, René Arnoux, and Alain Prost, both had a problem with the distributor, Riccardo Patrese, who suffered an engine malfunction on lap 64, Marc Surer, who run out of fuel on lap 61, Mario Andretti, who had a throttle issue on lap 59, Keke Rosberg, who suffered a suspension problem on lap 56, Patrick Tambay, and Michele Alboreto, both had a problem with the clutch, Didier Pironi, who had a turbo failure on lap 13, Nelson Piquet, who experienced issues with a tyre on lap 11, Bruno Giacomelli, who had a transmission problem on lap 5, Gilles Villeneuve, Andrea de Cesaris, and Siegfried Stohr, all of whom lost control and spun off the track, and Alan Jones, who retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars on lap 3.
