James Hunt won the race from the pole, followed by Niki Lauda, and Gunnar Nilsson completing the podium.

These included, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, and Ronnie Peterson, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, John Watson, who had a fuel system failure on lap 60, Emerson Fittipaldi, who had a throttle issue on lap 42, Arturo Merzario, who had a transmission problem on lap 28, Riccardo Patrese, who suffered a fuel pressure loss on lap 20, Patrick Depailler, who saw the breaks of the car give up on lap 16, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, who had a turbo failure on lap 16, Ian Scheckter, and Rupert Keegan, both had to retire due to an accident, Patrick Tambay, who suffered from electrical problems on lap 3, and David Purley, Andy Sutcliffe, Guy Edwards, Tony Trimmer, Brian McGuire, and Mikko Kozarowitzky, all of whom did not prequalify.
