Mika Häkkinen won the race from the pole, followed by Michael Schumacher, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen completing the podium.

The reace did not end without incidents... 13 drivers out of the original 22 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who run out of fuel on lap 71, Pedro de la Rosa, Jacques Villeneuve, and Johnny Herbert, all of whom experienced an hydraulic malfunction, Alessandro Zanardi, Jean Alesi, David Coulthard, and Jarno Trulli, all of whom experienced issues with the gearbox, Rubens Barrichello, who suffered an engine malfunction on lap 42, Pedro Diniz, and Damon Hill, both retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, Giancarlo Fisichella, who had a problem with the clutch on lap 38, and Stéphane Sarrazin, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 31.

From 1996 to 2002 the grid order was decided in a single qualifying session which would last 1 hour. During this time each driver had a maximun of 12 laps to set their best time.
