1984 Austrian Grand Prix

The Austrian Grand Prix 1984 was the 12th round of the 1984 F1 season, and took place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, on August 19th.

Niki Lauda won the race after starting in the 4th position, followed by Nelson Piquet, who originally had the pole position, and Michele Alboreto completing the podium with an expectacular comeback, all the way from the 12th position of the grid.

Incidents

The reace did not end without incidents... 16 drivers out of the original 27 who started did not managed to cross the finish line.

These included, Riccardo Patrese, who run out of fuel on lap 48, Gerhard Berger, and Piercarlo Ghinzani, both experienced issues with the gearbox, Patrick Tambay, Nigel Mansell, Elio de Angelis, Eddie Cheever, Derek Warwick, Jacques Laffite, and Jo Gartner, all of whom suffered an engine malfunction, Ayrton Senna, who suffered a loss in oil pressure on lap 35, Alain Prost, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 28, Huub Rothengatter, who did not classify on lap 23, Andrea de Cesaris, who had an problem with the injection on lap 15, and Keke Rosberg, who on lap 15.

There was also action outise of the track itself, and the stwearts decided to disqualify Stefan Bellof at the end of the race.
