The Australian Grand Prix 1999 was the 1st round of the 1999 F1 season, and took place at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, on March 7th.

Eddie Irvine won the race after starting in the 6th position, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and Ralf Schumacher completing the podium.

Mika Häkkinen started from the pole position, but didn't manage to cross the finish line, as he had a throttle issue, and had to retire on lap 21st.

These included, Ricardo Zonta, Luca Badoer, and Jean Alesi, all of whom experienced issues with the gearbox, Alexander Wurz, who suffered a suspension problem on lap 28, Pedro Diniz, who had a transmission problem on lap 27, Marc Gené, Jarno Trulli, and Damon Hill, all of whom retired dure to damage caused by a collision with other cars, Olivier Panis, who had a wheel problem on lap 23, Mika Häkkinen, who had a throttle issue on lap 21, Alessandro Zanardi, who lost control and spun off the track on lap 20, David Coulthard, who experienced an hydraulic malfunction on lap 13, Jacques Villeneuve, who took damage to the rear wing of the car on lap 13, and Johnny Herbert, who saw the car in fire on lap 0.

From 1996 to 2002 the grid order was decided in a single qualifying session which would last 1 hour. During this time each driver had a maximun of 12 laps to set their best time.
